Actress Celeste Holm turned 88 on Sunday. She co-starred in the classic sophisticated backstage comedy/drama from 1950, All About Eve. In the black & white still from the film, she’s the lady in the middle facing the star of the film, Bette Davis.

In the color photo, you can see Celeste Holm today with her husband. By the way, her husband is the handsome, dark-haired man on the far left. I am so not making this up. I sat behind the married couple at a Broadway opening night (as I wrote in the entry under this one), and watched as he gently stroked the back of her neck during the first act. I thought he was her bodyguard and was attempting to revive her. During the intermission, I met someone involved with the play who broke the news to me to he’s not hired security, he’s the other half. Having had no luck for months on Match.com and other online dating sites and feeling somewhat jealous, I mumbled to myself, “Great. She looks like a kitchen witch and got a hunk like that. Meanwhile I couldn’t get lucky on Death Row with a fistful of $50 bills and a carton o’ Camels.”
I have since gotten over myself and I wish Celeste Holm a very happy birthday. All things considered, she’s an inspiration for all of us to keep hope alive. (But I still feel that Match.com can bite me.)
