Top 5 is done. That food won’t be repeating on you anymore as of last Monday. Food Network is putting those repeats of mine away to make room for new repeats of more current shows. Thanks to all of you who watched me and helped make it a hit while it lasted.

Saturday, September 29th, 2007Fun with a Big Johnson
Friday, September 28th, 2007I reviewed The Game Plan this morning on “Wake Up With Whoopi.” Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson becomes a Disney babydaddy this weekend in that kiddie comedy. He plays an NFL pro whose bachelor days are ended when he discovers he’s a dad. During the review, Whoopi told us that she was up for the role of the superstar quarterback’s agent. I had said that I’d love to see them work together because she loves Johnson. Then, come to find out, she almost did. For reasons I’ll not reveal here, Disney ultimately went with Kyra Sedgwick. Whoopi was glad Kyra got booked because the movie was shot pre-The Closer and we love it when talented actresses such as Kyra get work when they need it.
But, if The Game Plan was done before cable TV’s hit show The Closer became a hit for Kyra, that lets you know how long Disney had it ready for release. Since it was completed, Dwayne Johnson has become a more relaxed and better actor. Just thought I’d share some inside Hollywood scoop with you. I do hope he and Whoopi get together on the big screen at some time. That could be pretty cool.

Thursday, September 27th, 2007My distant lookalike cousin, Professor Robert Haige, is a guest today for the In The Know forum on The Onion. Watch him try to make pithy comments about the hot political issues going on right now in Nigeria.
As I’ve said to him at several family gatherings, “What’s found in the word ‘clueless’? U.”
Porgy and Bess Onscreen
Monday, September 24th, 2007This Wednesday and Thursday, Sept. 26th and 27th, the Ziegeld Theater on West 54th Street here in Manhattan will present the rarely-seen movie musical adaptation of George Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess. The score is lush and beautiful, the lavish Goldwyn production was directed by Otto Preminger, and the stars are — Sidney Poitier, Dorothy Dandridge, Sammy Davis Jr., Brock Peters, Pearl Bailey and Diahann Carroll. There’s a lot of Black History on that screen…and off. Poitier’s operatic singing voice in the 1959 film was dubbed by the late Robert McFerrin, father of Bobby (”Don’t Worry, Be Happy”) McFerrin.
So, if you’re in the New York City area, that’ll be at 8p at the Ziegfeld Theater. I love a Gershwin tune. How about you? How sad that racism of the time only allowed us one teaming of Dorothy Dandridge and Sidney Poitier — the first two African-American performers to be nominated for Best Actress and Best Actor Academy Awards.

Au Revoir, Mon Ami
Sunday, September 23rd, 2007This morning comes news that legendary French mime artist Marcel Marceau has passed away.
Sources say he died quietly.
Marcel Marceau was in his mid-80s.
Penn’s Pal
Friday, September 21st, 2007Into The Wild — OK, the performances by Emile Hirsch as the young traveller and Hal Holbrook as the kind old widower who helps him along the way are excellent, but c’mon already. Nearly 2 1/2 hours of watching some goyishe rich runaway have an existential meltdown in the back of bus? Puh-leeze!!!!
That’s why people make movies like Knocked Up. But the photography of our national landscape is terrific. And there’s that rich white kid killing a moose for only to discover that he couldn’t eat it. 2 1/2 hours.
much obliged!
Thursday, September 20th, 2007What do Sophia Loren, Anne Meara (comedienne/actress mother of Ben Stiller), Dr. Joyce Brothers and Deborah (Mrs. Al Roker) Roberts of ABC News and I have in common?
Today’s our birthday! Sept 20th. BIG THANKS to you sweethearts who remembered and sent me totally cool messages. I am too flattered that you remembered. Today, on my birthday, I get to write some words every member of Screen Actors Guild would love to write: I’m rehearsing this evening for a part I’m shooting this weekend. I will be available for belated slices o’ cake at later dates. Thank you all again for the best wishes. I haven’t been tossed a little birthday party since 1989. Maybe next year, if I have my own show, I’ll throw one for myself. Check your calendars.
senior smackdown
Wednesday, September 19th, 200770something former CBS anchor Dan Rather is suing CBS News for not having his back after his news story that President Bush wasn’t exactly accurate with the information on his military service. He’s suing his ex-bosses and workplace for $70 million.
Wow. That’s almost what Katie Couric makes a year.
The Manilow-down
Tuesday, September 18th, 2007We asked Whoopi today what the deal is with Barry Manilow causing a controversy because he doesn’t want to be interviewed by a certain young blonde on “The View.” Whoopi didn’t know anything about it either — just what she read in the papers.
I hope Barry Manilow does change his mind and appear on “The View” — so viewers all across the country can get an idea of what Clay Aiken will look like when he’s 60.

Favorite Emmy Couple
Monday, September 17th, 2007Stanley Tucci and the incomparable Elaine Stritch.
I know that Tucci was just presenting an award…but I would’ve given him an Emmy for just looking hot. Which, to me, he always does.
I think Madeline Kahn’s character in Young Frankenstein said it best: “Woof!”
